Department of Archaeology

A small team will be returning to Bury Farm in August 2018.  We hope to better understand the relationship between several of the prehistoric structures in the mid-chalks.  We will not have an open day this year, but if you are interested and local, let us hear from you.

Open Day 2015

The best way to introduce yourself to the archaeology at Bury Farm is through the OPEN DAY held on site during our field seasons.  The 2015 Open Day will be announced in June.

During the Open Day, visitors will have the opportunity to hear about our findings to date, learn about our goals and research, and to put the findings from this area into the wider regional context.  The Open Day is co-hosted by the local ACE business near the site, where you will be able to read about the project and see some of the artefacts first hand.  The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology will be on hand to help contextualise these local findings with regional artefacts from the collection and social media to allow you to directly link to museum collections for comparison.  Site tours of the excavations will be held at regular intervals during the Open Day.  Please be aware that access to the site is across private property and a working farm, so visitors should only come down with a staff member.  Please also remember to dress accordingly if you wish to visit the excavations, however, you can still enjoy the Open Day through the media and artefacts at the ACE Foundation facility.

Refreshments will be available at the ACE Foundation during the day, so come and enjoy learning about the local prehistory as well as meeting others in the local community! All are welcome to attend and there is no registration for the Open Day afternoon.

Volunteering 2015

We are looking for volunteers willing to commit to at least 5 days during the 2015 excavation season.  Why do we set this minimum?  Following excavation and field research through a week allows volunteers to engage in all aspects of fields work and it allows the volunteer to develop their interest and skills as well as making the most of their experience.

Excavation can be an exhausting.  If you are considering volunteering, we want you to be aware of the physical nature of archaeology and the fact that excavation may not be the most suitable for everyone.   However, there are many activities that are less strenuous and volunteering is open to all abilities.  The main thing is enthusiasm and interest!

Volunteers must be over 16 years of age (16-18 year olds must have guardian permission).  If you are interested in volunteering or if you have specific questions regarding fieldwork, contact Dr. Sheila Kohring ()

Calling Young Archaeologists 2015 (Saturday, 15th of August)

Children between the ages of 8 and 13 are invited to experience archaeology first hand by coming and digging with the archaeologists for a morning during excavations.  Two sessions will be held during the field season, and children may attend either session. The sessions will run from 9:30am - 12:00pm and parents are invited to join them at this time for well-deserved hot drinks and biscuits.

Participants will be introduced to the site with a short walk around the local landscape, learning to recognise natural (and cultural!) features.  They will then be teamed with our archaeologists digging in the trenches where they will learn basic excavation skills, how to tell the difference between different soils and prehistoric artefact identification.  We will end the morning with snacks and hot chocolate (especially if it is raining)!

As participants will be working side-by-side with archaeologists, places will be restricted to 8 to 10 individuals and need to be booked in advance.  This ensure that participants receive appropriate supervision and get to experience all aspects of the excavation.  Participants need to wear walking or hiking boots and jeans or trousers. An extra jumper and some light rain gear are recommended (just in case). Please note that as this year our event is on a Saturday morning, organisation will be directly through the Bury Farm team.  However, we will still be based at the ACE Foundation and signs will be posted.

If you have any questions or would like to register, please contact Sheila Kohring (sek34@cam.ac.uk) in the first instance.
