Biography

Growing up in Greece, my interest in the past made its appearance early on, through visits to museums and archaeological sites. I completed my undergraduate studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (BA in Archaeology and History of Art). I then completed my Master’s at University College London (MA in Archaeology). My Master’s dissertation focused on the examination of settlement patterns in a mountainous area of Crete (Dikte Massif) using GIS applications and statistical analyses. I then started my PhD here in Cambridge back in 2020. My PhD dissertation is entitled as follows: ‘A view from the mountain’s top’: Modelling the use and perception of the mountainous areas of prehistoric Crete. Throughout my studies, I have taken part in several excavations and archaeological surveys in Greece.

Research

My PhD focuses on the mountainous areas of prehistoric Crete. I am using underexploited legacy survey data from the Final Neolithic up until the Early Iron Age (ca. 4000-700/600 BCE) to model the use and perception of different mountainous areas on the island. I aim to adopt an integrated approach that brings landscapes together, both in terms of their altitude, as well as in terms of their different uses (political, economic, and religious). Through this diachronic, integrated, and comparative approach, I hope to not only explore the environmental and social factors that might have influenced site location but also reach a better understanding of how people may have approached and perceived those landscapes across time. I aspire to contribute to theoretical discussions concerning the Cretan mountains and the way mountainous areas are approached in general, as well as more practical ones, relating to the use of the term ‘site’, the reuse of legacy data, and the visibility/invisibility of the archaeological record.
