The Cambridge Archaeological Unit, the McDonald Institute and Magdalene College are combining to celebrate the 30 November 1923 publication of The Archaeology of the Cambridge Region by Cyril Fox.
A conference will be held in Magdalene College (Cambridge papers), the McDonald Institute (International papers) and in the field, between the 6 and 8 November 2023.
The CONFERENCE: Cyril Fox and regional approaches to archaeology within a comparative framework.
A two-day conference will examine Foxʼs contribution to the archaeological understanding of the Cambridge region, comparing his 1923 understanding of it with that of today and in so doing, addressing the main conference theme of what constitutes a ʽregionʼ. In light of this, the conference will also examine other ʽregionsʼ within a comparative framework across Europe where intensive archaeological surveys have taken place, perhaps also partly inspired by Foxʼs 1923 publication.
An exhibition will remain open in the Cripps Gallery of the Magdalene Library until 14 December, 2023.
