Event speaker:
Samat Shakenov, Senior Archaeologist, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan

The talk provides an overview of the research on the elite Saka burial mounds in the foothills of the Tarbagatai mountains, conducted by the Shilikta-Tarbagatai archaeological expedition under the leadership of Prof.  Abdesh Toleubaev, starting in 2018. The main emphasis is on the latest archaeological materials identified during excavations at the sites of Shilikty, Koktubek, and Eleke Sazy. Archaeological excavations of the royal mounds have revealed unique gold items and decorations, while also providing essential information about the architecture of the monuments and funerary rites. The research results allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and worldview of the ancient inhabitants of eastern Kazakhstan.
